Activating Assets: Time at Home

This month, stuff our focus is Asset #20: Time at Home
Young person is out with friends “with nothing special to do”
two or fewer nights per week.
Category: External Assets
Subcategory: Constructive Use of Time
Nationally, only 51% of youth report having this asset.

5 Ways to Build Time at Home:

  • Honor meal times as family time each evening.  Sit around a table together with the television off to encourage conversation.
  • Limit television, video game and computer time to help your child to be active in and out of the home.
  • Create family traditions that will make spending time at home special.  Try a monthly craft night or game night and be consistent.
  • Involve your child in the chores that you do around the house every now and then and in return, help them with their chores.  Many times great conversations can happen while hands are busy.
