Activating Assets: Positive Family Communication

This month, our focus is Asset #2*:  Positive Family Communication
Family communication is positive and open.

Category: External Asset
Subcategory and Icon: Support and red heart

Nationally, 28% of youth report having this asset.

5 Ways to Build Positive Family Communication

  1. Eat a meal together every day.  Make it fun by starting a tradition, like Wednesday night tacos or Saturday morning waffles.
  2. Look at your child when you speak to him. Eye contact lets him know you are listening and care.
  3. When your child is emotional, help her name her emotion, like thrilled, angry, frustrated, or excited. Being able to identify emotions will make her a better communicator.
  4. Set a few minutes aside each day to spend with your children. Let them decide what to talk about or do.
  5. Choose a common interest and develop it together. Be willing to teach and learn from your child.

SPREAD THE MESSAGE
You can help spread the asset message in our community! Please add the following message as an e-mail tagline for the month.

Spend time talking to, laughing with, and holding your child.
